On This Day in 1942, the Battle of Los Angeles took place as anti-aircraft artillery opened fire on an unidentified flying object over LA. According to the Secretary of the Navy it was a false alarm, UFO conspiracists see that as a cover up. Under 70 years later, an actual battle took place in Los Angeles involving actual aliens and Aaron Eckhart.

On This Day in 1941, a red-letter date in the history of science as plutonium is first produced and isolated by Dr. Glenn T. Seaborg. It was later found that in nuclear reactions, plutonium generates 1.21 gigawatts (equivalent to a lightning strike), perfect for powering the flux capacitor.

On This Day in 1947, visionary Edwin Land demonstrated the first “instant camera” (which we all now know as the Polaroid) in New York City. It took 46 years for someone to finally demonstrate how to develop the pictures correctly. You need to shake them as André 3000 sang it. “Shake it like a Polaroid picture.”

On This Day in 1923, archaeologist Howard Carter risked an epic curse as he opened the tomb of King Tut himself. What’s interesting is that apparently King Tut knew about Russian nesting dolls, seeing as there were three coffins nested within his sarcophagus.

On This Day in 1965, Canada dropped the lame Red Ensign flag and picked up the plain and simple red-and-white maple leaf instead. My question is, if the maple leaf is red, why are the Toronto Maple Leafs blue? O Canada.

On This Day in 1633, Galileo did the fandango all the way to Rome for his trail before the Inquisition. Thunderbolts and lightning, though I doubt it was very very frightening being under house arrest.

archymedius:
So, I want to give away one of my prints from The Legends. The details are not entirely set in stone yet but I figure the best way is to give away a RedBubble gift certificate worth the amount of a print or so (this way you don’t have to send me your address or anything). Let’s say $50, which is the price of 4 12” x 17” photographic prints, or 1 8” x 11.4”...

On This Day in 1996, Skynet took a leap forward in world domination when IBM computer Deep Blue defeated world chess champion Gary Kasparov in their first chess match. Throughout the six game battle, Kasparov ended up victorious, but the fact that a computer could defeat a human was a scary thought. This blazed the trail for Watson on Jeopardy. Take that Ken Jennings.
